Rhetorical Devices Quizlet – Judy, Grade 11

Rhetoric is defined as “the art or study of using language effectively and persuasively.” There are many rhetorical devices, some of which are used on a daily basis. For instance, the sentence, “The car wouldn’t start this time, but at least it didn’t catch on fire,” contains a rhetorical device called antanagoge, which is the contradiction of a negative comment with a positive one. This device makes the mishap or the misfortune appear less serious than it actually is. Some rhetorical devices are reserved for more literary occasions since they are more formal or stylistic in nature. For example, the zeugma as used in “She opened the door and her heart to the homeless boy,” is more stylistic in nature and hence is mostly used in the written language or formal speeches. In order to be competent writers and speakers, all high school students need to learn and apply these devices.

This quizlet is created by one of my grade 11 students, and it contains more than 40 different rhetorical devices.
