Many famous scientists believe that people should develop more advanced technology, but are they completely right? Just like the present, when everyone is really dependent on technology because of COVID 19, people in the story  “Pedestrian” are also dependent on technology. In Ray Bradbury’s “Pedestrian” an average guy named Learnard Mead strolls through town every single day but he has never seen a person other than him when strolling around. One day, Learnard is strolling around like every day when a police car comes up to him and sends him to the Psychiatric Centre for Research on Regressive Tendencies because in 2053 no one walks anymore. Bradbury aims to convey the message that people should not grow too dependent on technology because they will give up their most important activities, completely change their lifestyle, and not go out and see nature.

If people become too dependent on technology, they will give up and forget their most important activities. People in the present consider socializing and taking jogs or walks very normal, but in 2053, people do not do any of those things and just stay home. When Leonard Mead is strolling, “The street [is] silent and long and empty.” This means no one goes on the street to walk anymore except Leonard and if they do not go outside they will not talk with each other face to face. When Leonard is arrested, there is no person but a police car controlled by AI, so that means people will be interacting with robots rather than humans. That is why people should not depend on technology because people will forget about their own daily activities like walking and socializing.

People’s lifestyles will change if they are too dependent on technology. Almost everyone has a TV or a screen now but they do not stare at it 24/7, but over time people drop their most important activities and get addicted to screens. When the police car interrogates Leonard, it asks, “you have a viewing screen in your house to see with?” This means people only look at their screens and look at nothing else. This is a completely changed lifestyle from the present. When being asked questions, Leonard thinks, “Crime was ebbing; there was no need now for the police,” People are so addicted to screens and their house that they do not do crime or anything, normally crimes happen every day.

Dependence on technology not only will cause lifestyle change but will also prevent people from seeing nature and not getting out of their house. In the present, people still like nature and go on trails, but there are always those people who just like staying at home. It turns out that in 2053 everyone stays at home and does not look at nature or even care. In “Pedestrian” people look at screens all day and do not take a break. When Leonard is walking, he thinks, “The street is silent and long and empty.” This means people do not go outside and enjoy nature and have fresh air outside. Not doing this affects people’s physical and mental health. So people should not be dependent on technology or people would not be able to see nature.

People should not be too dependent on technology because they will give up their most important activities, completely change their lifestyle, and not go out and see nature. People have already shown that in 2019-2021 ever since the pandemic everyone is using computers, iPads, and other electronic devices, but is that really good? People right now are too dependent on technology; therefore, they are rewriting Pedestrian but in real life.
