Rationale
I made a collage with blended borders to show Mary’s disorder of thoughts. The first image depicts a traditional restaurant setting, with dull colours and a traditional Korean symbol on the wall. The words are floating, dominating the space despite not being present. Three characters are evident: Joon-Ho in green, Mary in a white dress, with a hand on her mouth, feeling powerless, and a child writing his name. The other characters are shaded in black, showing Mary’s disinterest in their conversation. She looks at the child, reminding her of her lost Korean name and friends who could not stand up for themselves. The gray images show Mary’s mind. A cracked mirror with her Korean name written behind it, showing her loss of identity. She is chained to Joon-Ho, representing her loss of freedom. “TRAPPED” is connected to the word freedom by a green string, symbolizing growth. The right side shows Mary, now empowered since she realizes she can claim her name without being chained to a Korean man. Her name is above in red and gold, symbolizing courage. The aura in the left panel is dark, contrasting with the bright side, showing a change in her thoughts and the overall process of everything. There are broken chains on the floor behind her as well, showing her freedom. The last image is messily blended with the previous images, representing the chaos of the moment. The traditional Korean symbol shatters, representing the destruction of those expectations for Mary. Those around are blurred, and the focus is on Mary. Her outburst shocks everyone, but shows her break from cultural pressures and her journey of self-reclamation.
